A1 Licence

To get an A1 license, you'll be required to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course provides essential motorcycle training and will prepare you for the practical and theory tests. To pass your A1 test, you will require the assistance of an experienced motorcycle instructor. The test should take about 20 minutes and will include the modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is conducted at the training centre and focuses on off-road manoeuvres such as controlled stop, a slalom, and an eight figure. The rest of your test will be conducted on the road and will concentrate on your ability to control a motorbike while it is moving at high speed.
Module 2 will focus on riding a motorbike in traffic and the ability to navigate intersections. You will be assessed on your ability to follow road signs, and understand and apply road laws. You will be required to demonstrate your skills at low speeds and to perform slow control exercises, such as turning left and riding up and down a hill, or turning right and then making a U-turn.
Once you have passed your A1 license, you will be capable of upgrading to the A2 licence after passing your CBT Theory, CBT and Practical Tests. You can then operate any A2 category bike and be able to carry a passenger.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence is the second stage in getting a full motorcycle license. The A2 licence is a restricted one and is only available by those who are 19 or over and possessing an active CBT. It permits riders to ride motorcycles with a maximum power output of 47 BHP although bikes that produce more than this can be restricted down to 94 BHP.
If you decide to go down the A2 option, you'll need to be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked in the same location that you make your CBT booking or the theory test. The A2 route is for those who have completed their CBT course quickly and are able financially and physically to ride a larger bike.
The first module of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor one in which you will learn how to control your bike, which includes emergency stops and slow speed maneuvering. You will then take the road portion of the test. In this section, you will have to demonstrate hazard-avoidance and road positioning. You will also have to conduct life-saving checks and maintain a distance of 2 seconds from the vehicle in front of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make up to a total of 10 points. This includes not using your mirrors, and failing to maintain a safe distance.
After passing both parts of the A2 motorcycle test you can ride any motorcycle that is in the A2 category. This includes the popular Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-07 models. Although these bikes aren't especially powerful but they are capable of navigating the speed limits and offer a comfortable, enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence allows riders to upgrade to larger bikes that have more power. The A2 Licence offers additional benefits that aren't available with the CBT. For instance you can ride on motorways and transport passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence by completing additional training and passing the relevant exam. The A2 license is valid for two years, and can be upgraded to a full, unlimited A licence after two years.
The first step to obtain your A2 licence is to successfully pass the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have met the requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 practical exam requires you to demonstrate your riding skills in a closed-circuit. the module 2 test requires manoeuvres in an open road.
You must be able show excellent observation skills during the A2 practical test and anticipate road dangers. You should also be able to use the correct road positioning and execute controlled maneuvers. For instance, you should be able to execute U-turns and perform an eight-point figure. You should be able also to control the bike in slow-speed conditions, such as when turning at junctions or responding to traffic signals.
After having passed your A2 test, you can begin working towards obtaining the full A license. This can be done by either passing the direct entry exam or following the progressive access route. To be eligible for the direct entry route, you must pass the theory test, and then pass the mod 1 and module 2 practical tests with a bike with at 54bhp or more.

A4 Licence
